Softcover nursery rhyme book with metamorphic folding illustrations. Color illustrations with the “lift the flap” movable feature on each of 18 pages.

The plates are signed "W.L.S." which refers to the Virginia-born illustrator and writer William Ludwell Sheppard (1833-1912) who worked for several of the large publishing houses including Donaldson Brothers.

This flip series was designed by Donaldson Brothers, who applied for the patent. This is a transformation book. The "magic colored pictures" are half illustrations, which transform that portion of the picture to the second part of the verse. Very rare as this book was only given to children who visited the famous* John Wanamaker department store in Philadelphia. (*see Collectors Corner below)

Condition: Near Fine. All movable transformations are complete and working with no tears. Well bound. Pages are in wonderful shape. See photos.

Collectors Corner:

The John Wanamaker department store has an important history. Mr. Wanamaker was 38th postmaster general of the United States appointed by President Harrison (1889-1893). He was a Merchant, Christian Leader, Civic & political figure - considered a "Pioneer in Marketing", In 1869, he established a luxury shop, John Wanamaker & Co., on Chestnut Street between 8th and 9th streets. In 1876 he opened “the Grand Depot,” Philadelphia’s first department store, on the site of a former Pennsylvania Railroad depot at Thirteenth and Market streets. The John Wanamaker Company is also famous for its pipe organ which was originally built in 1904 for the St. Louis World's Fair. Mr. Wanamaker bought it and shipped it to Philadelphia. The organ, dedicated by President William Howard Taft on December 30, 1911. Today, the Wanamaker Grand Court Organ with 28,604 pipes, is the largest fully functioning pipe organ in the world and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1980.
