The pictorial covered front cover depicts a young girl dressed for riding with two dogs near. The back cover is in good condition with some minor scratches and a small water stain. There is light shelf wear and corner bumps. The original cloth spine shows some wear but is intact. Original end papers are in good condition with neat reinforcements in the gully's. The pages are a bit yellowed with occasional spots. Most have been reattached, original staples show minor rust. The book is tight. While the book opens continuing throughout with verse and story including charming illustrations related to the stand-up scenes the real joy of the book is delightfully revealed in four stand-up grotto scenes! By opening the page the linen hinges stretch lifting the scenes so that the frame and figures stand up. Each scene is viewed through a pretty flowered die-cut frame (thus called a "grotto") with a very pleasing background related to the stand-ups.

Scene 1. Girl with Pet Rabbits: In the background are rabbits in a green hutch in a garden. Stand-up is a girl feeding her five pet rabbits.

Scene 2. The Black Sheep: Background depicts a field with children looking over a fence. Stand-up is five sheep lying in a meadow (One is darker in color but hardly The Black Sheep named in the poem).

Scene 3. My Little Chicks: The background shows a thatched cottage and small chicks. In the stand-up a girl feeds baby chicks and a hen.

Scene 4. Farmyard Scene: Background depicts an impressive neat farmhouse, barns and a child feeding pigeon. In the stand-up two donkeys eat hay from a wagon while a smiling boy with outreaching arms approaches the viewer.

All the scenes are colorful, bright and clean and fully functional. The charming stand-ups, frames, drawings, verse and story are exemplary of the exquisite, sentimental beauty, especially of little folks, in an idealized world characterized by Nister. In exceptionally good condition this book will continue that enduring charm for the collector.
