Book Description:

The title page states "Cosy-Cot-Farm with Pictures and Verses the Children to charm." The last page has the name of Clifton Bingham (1859-1913).

Bingham was a prolific writer and artist who worked for Nister as well as Tuck. The small book has sixteen pages with delightful drawings, pleasing stories and verse as well as 2 splendid double-page pop-ups. Yes, it will charm.

Cover: Two pretty smiling children look out an open window while a horse, chickens and chicks walk around. A large dog watches from the door of the flower and vine covered brick house..

Pop-up 1: "Morning at The Farm" has a farm and large building in the background. In the first pop-up a man and a boy in very fine riding dress are ready to go riding on very handsome fully saddled horses while waiting (apparently somewhat impatient) to get out of the farm yard. A young boy anxiously works to move the sheep out of the way with outstretched arms as three donkeys stand nearby. The top pop-up shows a large group of sheep with several chickens and geese walking around seemingly unaware or unconcerned of any possible tension behind them. There is a small repair in background of the roof line and a crease in the sheep group from an earlier mis-fold. All parts are original and the colors are clear and bright.

Pop-up 2: "Breakfast Time" is the second pop-up scene of more complex detail and in near perfect condition. The background is a fine farm house in the distance and a nice cow shed. The pop-ups are rich in color with many animals and people. Look at the picture to appreciate the details of this very charming, busy group. In the first pop-up two large horses drink at a trough with a large pump. A boy plays with a dog as two large cows are walking away, In the top pop-up children feed the geese, a woman gives a bucket of drink to calves while goats, other geese and turkeys stand by waiting their turns to eat. There is a sense of well-being in all aspects of the scene, an interesting comparison to the seeming tension of the first pop-up in both pop-ups all parts are original, in near fine condition and in excellent working order.

It is interesting to note that although the sepia illustrations and verses are different the same two pop-ups appear in Tuck's "Playtime Pictures" (c.1890.). This was not an unusual practice as no copyright restriction prevented multiple uses of images even among different publishers.
