Printed in Germany, [circa 1893].

Oblong 4to (12 x 10 1/4 inches; 30.5 x 26 cm). Single-sheet color-printed panorama affixed to front and rear boards, forming a three-dimensional pop-up scene when opened. Buildings and landmarks of the Chicago World's Fair are shown in chromolithograph, with each building numbered to correspond with a key printed on the front cover. Marked “Registered” and “Printed in Germany” on cover. Patent date reads June 26, 1883.

Condition: Very Good only. Original covers with light soiling and a 1-inch split at binding edge. All pop-up components present and in good shape, with a tiny torn flag neatly reattached. However, pull-tab mechanism at rear is detached and will require careful repair to restore full movement. Still opens properly for display.

A scarce and desirable pop-up souvenir from one of the most historically significant expositions of the 19th century.

Collector’s Corner

This delightful and dimensional souvenir was sold on-site at the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago, known as the "White City." Its pop-up panorama transforms the fair’s monumental buildings into a charmingly miniaturized architectural display. Featured structures include the Art Palace, Dairy Building, and Casino & Pier.

Produced in Germany for the American market, this title belongs to a class of late 19th-century “optical souvenirs” that were highly collectible at international fairs. These movable paper formats offered visitors a way to encapsulate and relive the grandeur of their experience.

Scholar Amy Ogata (2002, Journal of Design History) describes the cultural significance of these items:

“The paper peepshow and pop-up souvenirs that were made for world's fairs operate metonymically… They offer a singular, fragmentary, viewpoint that stands for the whole experience of attending an international exposition.”

Unlike static guidebooks or postcards, the pop-up medium engaged the viewer in a participatory form of memory—creating an intimate, tactile link to the event.
