Description:
A rare, mint-condition example of Andy Warhol’s Index Book, a multimedia artist’s book produced at the height of Warhol’s fame and the 1960s counterculture era. This is the first printing, softcover edition, published in 1967 by Random House in New York and simultaneously in Toronto by Random House of Canada. All novelty elements are intact and unused, including unbroken tabs on the double-page dodecahedron (“geodesic dome”) and a still-stuck balloon page, with balloon shape visibly outlined on the verso—an expected effect of age-related adhesive behavior. Original $4.95 price sticker is still present.
Issued as a commercial artist’s book, Index blends pop art, celebrity ephemera, humor, and avant-garde design. The book contains Warhol’s signature blend of irreverence and innovation across 10 interactive and multimedia features, including pop-ups, a flexi-disc recording, foldouts, hidden tabs, and more.
This copy is one of five mint-condition examples discovered as new old stock from a single stored lot in New York. None were ever sold or handled prior to consignment. All interior elements are unmarked, bright, and undamaged.
