Andy Warhol's Index Book (Pop-Up Book)
New York: Random House, 1967. First edition. Softcover issue.
Quarto (11 × 8.25 in. / 28 × 22 cm). Original pictorial stiff wraps with silver-lettered spine and publisher’s original $4.95 price sticker on front cover. Unpaginated, with all ten original novelties intact and in very good condition.
A landmark of 1960s book design and counterculture publishing—Warhol’s first mass-market artist’s book, famously interactive and wildly experimental. Conceived as a multimedia “children’s book for hipsters,” it merges pop-up engineering, die-cutting, inserts, and sound elements with Warhol’s Factory mythos.
This complete copy includes all 10 original interactive components:
-
3D Pop-up Castle – fully intact and functional.
-
Red Accordion – still squeaks, with strong bellows.
-
Pop-up Biplane – fine.
-
Chelsea Girls paper disk – still mounted on spring (not glued to page but attached via double-sided tape—can be reaffixed easily).
-
Geodesic “Dodecahedron” Dome with String – fully functional, with the rarely surviving elastic band still in working order; string detached from dome but present.
-
Lou Reed Flexi-disc – unplayed condition, with center unpunched and disk still bound into the book.
-
Fold-out Warhol photograph (rainbow nose) – fine.
-
Hunts Tomato Can Pop-Up – fine.
-
“FOR A BIG SURPRISE!!!” blotter page – all 8 sponge-like inserts present.
-
Balloon page – balloon is present but (as is typical) stuck between pages due to age.
Condition: Very good. Minor expected handling to wrappers. Interior clean and bright. All mechanical elements present and functioning. Balloon page sealed, as in most copies. An unusually well-preserved softcover example.
