[Unknown Publisher]. Borduur Prenten Boek: Herinneringen aan mijne jeugd (Embroidery Picture Book, ca. 1900) – Dutch Interactive Children’s Book.
[Netherlands: n.p., circa 1900]. Quarto (28 pp.). Half linen over paper boards. Twelve removable chromolithographed embroidery plates, each with color-printed designs for stitching, plus letterpress text in Dutch.
A rare and exceptionally well-preserved Dutch interactive children’s book combining the functions of a keepsake album and an embroidery playbook. Borduur Prenten Boek: Herinneringen aan mijne jeugd (“Embroidery Picture Book: Memories of My Youth”) presents twelve finely printed chromolithograph plates intended for embroidery by children. Each sheet depicts a figure or scene with clearly defined outlines for needlework and is designed to be removed, stitched, and stored in the volume as a memento.
The concluding page explains the purpose of the work (translated from the Dutch):
“The general preference for colored embroidery plates has led to the publication of this work. How diligently our little ones embroider the beautiful colored plates, and how much more valuable this work becomes for them if it becomes possible to keep these plates well-arranged as a memory album! That is the purpose of the collection book of this play gift.”
Condition: Very Fine. Binding tight and square; pages clean; all twelve removable plates present, complete, and unworked. Minimal age toning; an unusually well-preserved survival.
Collector’s Corner: This title is unrecorded in the Dutch National Library Catalog (NCC), WorldCat, and major bibliographies of embroidery and toy books. A scarce example of turn-of-the-century Dutch interactive print culture, particularly notable for its focus on girls’ textile arts. Its hybrid format—bound album with detachable plates for embroidery
