Hansel and Grethel
(Honeycomb Tissue Pop-Up Book)
Philadelphia: B. Wilmsen, Triumph Edition, [1890]. Small oblong quarto (11 x 7.5 inches). Pictorial wrappers printed in color on both front and back covers. Complete with five double-page pop-up scenes incorporating seven vibrant honeycomb tissue constructions. Printed in Germany.
Condition:
Fine. This is the best condition example of this fragile pop-up title we have encountered. All seven intricate honeycomb pop-ups are present, fully functional, and remarkably well-preserved. Covers and pages are unusually clean and bright for their age. Slight discoloration visible on the cover (see photos), but the volume remains tightly bound with no tears.
Collector’s Corner:
Part of a stunning and ephemeral German-printed pop-up series imported and sold by B. Wilmsen in Philadelphia during the 1890s, these honeycomb tissue constructions represent a transitional moment in movable book history. The use of delicate spiraled paper honeycomb to create dramatic three-dimensional scenes was a technical marvel of the period and remains a significant feat of paper engineering.
