Raphael Tuck & Sons, Ltd.
The Busy Seaport Scenic Panorama Book: With Picture Models of Ships, etc., for Arranging in Position. London, Paris, New York: Raphael Tuck & Sons, Ltd., [ca. 1952].
Quarto (11½ x 9¾ in.; 29.2 x 24.8 cm). [10] unnumbered pages. Four folding chromolithographed plates in accordion format, designed to stand as a scenic panorama. Numbered slots throughout accommodate a full set of die-cut punch-out figures. Complete with all original movable pieces, including the variant “extra piece” — two alternative versions of the large ship for slot 36 — as originally issued. On the reverse of each slotted panel is printed narrative text. Rear panel forms the original pocket to store the figures when not in use.
Condition:
Very good. All movable figures present and in good condition, a few with light edge wear or minor bends. Folding panorama structure remains sound; original pocket intact. Colors bright. A complete and well-preserved example of this mid-century Tuck panorama.
Issued circa 1952, The Busy Seaport is one of the last known entries in Tuck’s long tradition of movable scenic panoramas. The maritime setting and active harbor scene are enhanced by the presence of dozens of slot-in figures—ships, cranes, workers, cargo, and waterfront vehicles—offering both educational and interactive appeal. Scarce complete with the additional variant ship figure. This edition includes 36 movable figures—more than any earlier Raphael Tuck panorama. As a result, complete copies are especially scarce. The higher figure count made them more susceptible to loss over time, and this title is widely believed to be among the last in the Tuck slot-in panorama series, likely issued circa 1952. The inclusion of an optional second version of the large harbor ship (slot 36) further distinguishes this panorama from its predecessors.
