Rare first edition of Tales from Fairyland, the debut title in Saalfield’s “Stand-Up Series No. 1,” an early interactive book format featuring die-cut figures intended to be detached and displayed. Each story is accompanied by a cardboard leaf with perforated figures and green bases. The original printed instructions encourage children to insert the die-cut characters into the folded bases so they “will then stand up.”
The tales include: Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Sugar House in the Wood, Snow White and Rose Red, Sleeping Beauty, Frog Prince, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Little Snow White. A total of 32 individual die-cut characters and 32 stands were printed.
Condition: 30 of the 32 die-cut figures are in fine condition; 2 show minor damage (see photos). All 32 stands are present and in fine condition. Figures are unpunched from the plates. Text block well bound. Covers show light wear with some paper loss to rear. Original pictorial wrappers present, and rare in this complete, unrestored state.
Collector’s Corner:
This landmark 1905 production marks the Saalfield Publishing Company’s entry into interactive toy books. Founded in Akron, Ohio, by Arthur J. Saalfield after acquiring the Warner Company, Saalfield became one of the largest publishers of juvenile literature in America, active until 1977.
Tales from Fairyland is the earliest title in the “Stand-Up Series No. 1.” A second series of smaller-format stand-up books was issued in 1909. The present edition was confirmed via archival records from Kent State University, which houses the Saalfield Publishing Company archives.
In the October 1909 Publishers Weekly, Vol. 76, Part 1, p. 824, Series 1 and Series 2 titles were described as follows:
Series 1: 8 1/2 x 10 3/4
Tales From Fairyland
The Animal World
Series 2 (Oblong): 5 1/2 x 8 1/4
Fairy Tale Pictures
Fairy Tale Friends
At the Farm
Our Wild Animals
These books reflect a moment of innovation as publishers like Saalfield explored dimensional play in response to the popularity of paper dolls and tableaux. Few survive in complete, unpunched condition.
