Panoramic Pictures at the Zoo. London, Paris, New York: Raphael Tuck & Sons, Ltd., Publishers to Their Majesties the King & Queen, [ca. 1901–1910].
Oblong quarto (11 x 8 in.; 27 x 21 cm folded; expands to 21 x 162 cm fully opened). Six double-sided panels joined accordion-style with original red cloth hinges. Glazed chromolithographed pictorial boards. One side of the panorama features six three-dimensional “perspective” plates of zoo animals—each concealed behind slatted cage fronts with name-label tabs that, when pulled out, convert the scene into a pop-up image. The reverse of the panorama contains four pages of printed text describing the animals.
The six pull-out perspective plates include:
-
Lions
-
Tigers
-
Camels
-
Zebras
-
Deer
-
Bears
The reverse text pages are titled:
-
Lion – Tiger – Kangaroo
-
Camel – Zebra – Ostrich
-
Deer – Bear – Monkey
-
Elephant – Wolf – Bison
Condition:
Very good. All six mechanical pull-tab plates present and fully functional, with no signs of repair or detachment. Red cloth hinges are clean and intact. Light chipping and shelf wear to the pictorial covers, consistent with age. Colors remain vibrant; all moving parts operate smoothly.
