The Magic Picture Book of Mother Goose Rhymes and Melodies
(Transformation Book)
New York: G.W. Dillingham Co., 1908. First edition. Quarto (over 9¾" – 12" tall).
Original red cloth boards with pictorial paper onlay. Illustrated in color.
[38] pages with 18 movable flaps. Illustrated throughout by Robert H. Porteous.
Condition:
Near Fine. All 18 movable transformation features are present, intact, and functioning perfectly with no tears. Pages are bright and remarkably clean. Well bound. Boards show light white spotting but remain structurally sound and attractive.
This is a classic transformation book where each of the 18 full-color illustrations incorporates a “magic flap” feature. When lifted, the image changes to reveal a visual punchline or narrative continuation, directly aligned with the second line of the accompanying Mother Goose rhyme.
Collector’s Corner:
Books by Robert H. Porteous for Dillingham are scarce, and this edition is rarely seen complete and in such pristine condition. G.W. Dillingham, active in New York publishing from the late 19th through early 20th century, issued numerous illustrated juveniles. This title stands among their most elaborate interactive works.
