Changing Pets was published by Ernest Nister around 1901. Measuring 8 x 6.5 inches and spanning 16 pages, it features five chromolithographed illustrations, each equipped with a movable flap. By lifting these flaps using attached ribbons, readers can transform the scenes, revealing alternate images beneath.

During its original release, only a portion of Ernest Nister’s works were translated into German for the simultaneous German market, facilitated through Theo Stroefer’s children’s book program. Stroefer's Kunstverlag published these German editions in Nuremberg, later expanding from a branch office in Munich. German editions of Nister's books are rarely found, and this particular copy reveals that some were indeed issued with dust jackets. This edition, a German translation of Nister’s Ride a Cock Horse, features two double-page pop-ups, capturing the charm and intricacy characteristic of Nister’s style.
